8 Days Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is the shortest and steepest route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It's a challenging 8-day trek that requires a high level of fitness and mental determination.

Tour Itinerary

Overview of the itinerary:

Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,800m) to Umbwe Cave Camp (2,940m)

You will start your trek at Umbwe Gate, where you will register with the park authorities and meet your guide and porters. The trek to Umbwe Cave Camp takes about 5-6 hours, passing through a dense forest with chances of spotting wildlife like black and white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys.

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp (2,940m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Today you will trek for about 6-7 hours through a steep and rocky trail to reach Barranco Camp. Along the way, you will have great views of the surrounding landscape, including the Barranco Wall.

Day 3: Acclimatization day at Barranco Camp (3,960m)

This is a rest day at Barranco Camp to help your body acclimatize to the altitude. You can take a short hike to the Barranco Wall to help with your acclimatization.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

You will trek for about 4-5 hours to Karanga Camp, which is located on a rocky ridge. Along the way, you will have great views of the Southern Icefields.

Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m)

Today you will trek for about 4-5 hours to reach Barafu Camp, which is the basecamp for summit night. The trail is mostly rocky and steep, and you will pass through a desert-like landscape with limited vegetation.

Day 6: Acclimatization day at Barafu Camp (4,673m)

This is another rest day at Barafu Camp to help your body acclimatize to the altitude. You can take a short hike to the Barafu Hut to help with your acclimatization.

Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,673m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

This is the summit day, and you will wake up around midnight to start your ascent to the summit. The trek to Uhuru Peak takes about 6-8 hours, and you will reach the summit in time for sunrise. You will then descend to Mweka Camp, where you will spend the night.

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

On the final day, you will trek back down to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificates and say goodbye to your guide and porters.

It's important to note that climbing Mount Kilimanjaro requires physical fitness and mental determination.
