6 Days Machame Route

The Machame route is a moderately difficult 6-day trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This popular route takes you through a variety of terrain, including rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,640m) to Machame Camp (2,835m)

You will start your trek at Machame Gate, where you will register with the park authorities and meet your guide and porters. The trek to Machame Camp takes about 5-6 hours, passing through dense rainforest with chances of spotting wildlife like black and white colobus monkeys, and a variety of bird species.

Day 2: Machame Camp (2,835m) to Shira Camp (3,840m)

Today you will trek for about 4-6 hours through moorland vegetation to reach Shira Camp. Along the way, you will pass through the valley and have great views of the surrounding landscape, including Shira Plateau and the Western Breach.

Day 3: Shira Camp (3,840m) to Lava Tower (4,640m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m)

This is a challenging day as you will trek up to Lava Tower, which is at an altitude of 4,640m, and then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,950m for overnight. The trek takes about 6-7 hours and offers great views of the Western Breach and the Barranco Wall.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Today you will trek for about 4-5 hours through a steep and rocky terrain to reach Karanga Camp. Along the way, you will climb the Barranco Wall and have great views of the surrounding landscape.

Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

You will trek for about 3-4 hours to reach Barafu Camp, which is the basecamp for summit night. The trail is mostly steep and rocky, and you will pass through a desert-like landscape with limited vegetation.

Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

This is the summit day, and you will wake up around midnight to start your ascent to the summit. The trek to Uhuru Peak takes about 6-8 hours, and you will reach the summit in time for sunrise. You will then descend to Mweka Camp, where you will spend the night.

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

On the final day, you will trek back down to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificates and say goodbye to your guide and porters.
